Default Tea - Healthier than water

Drinking three or more cups of tea a day is as good for you as drinking plenty of water and may even have extra health benefits, say researchers.

Tea not only rehydrates as well as water does, but it can also protect against heart disease and some cancers, UK nutritionists found.

Studies on caffeine have found very high doses dehydrate and everyone assumes that caffeine-containing beverages dehydrate. But even if you had a really, really strong cup of tea or coffee, which is quite hard to make, you would still have a net gain of fluid.

Also, a cup of tea contains fluoride, which is good for the teeth.

There was no evidence that tea consumption was harmful to health. However, research suggests that tea can impair the body's ability to absorb iron from food, meaning people at risk of anaemia should avoid drinking tea around mealtimes.

In terms of fluid intake, we recommend 1.5-2 litres per day and that can include tea. Tea is not dehydrating. It is a healthy drink.

I must admit I am more of a Coffee drinker - but think I will replace some of the cups with Tea :) No milk and sugar of course lol

Hi everyone, nice to be back after having been offline for a while :)
Ok this is a very interesting subject to myself and have had many discussions about this subject. Well like Chewy I am also an avid coffee drinker, I guess i consume about 9 - 12 mugs of coffee a day but I drink fresh coffee rather than the freeze dried type which in itself is as "coffee" as it gets, Now because I dont drink tea that makes things a little probmatic in the fact that I had no proper fluid intake as such, However my theory is this.. if our bodies are 2.3 make up of water then somehow we need to get that water back in, But anything thats added to water I.E juice, tea, coffee etc.. is no longer water so in effect our bodies are not actually getting pure replacemant.
I do however echo chewys sentiments on the Tea debate,
I have found a solution to my problem though and that is that I buy bottled water from Asda and I must admit I do notice a difference in my overall health in a positive way.
I will leave you with this theory though. If we consume beverage with water + something added how does our bodies decide which is water for our blood and which is something not water, interesting thought :)

That is sorta correct, in hot weather, the best thing to drink which will stop you sweating so much is a hot drink (tea, coffee, hot chocolate etc) if you dont sweat so much you do not get dehydrated plus if you are sweating a lot then the hot weather will heat the sweat up giving you the feeling of being hotter than you actually are.

yes if i have to admit it tea is healthier then water, but since living here with dozer i have to admit dozer has converted me to a coffee drinker and a black coffee at that which is supposed to make you more alert and keep you awake but... it doesn't have that much of an effect on me.

i used to always drink tea from the age of 15 and it certainly was alot better then water at the time as the water from berkshire didn't exactly taste that nice to drink anyway so the only other option was having a hot drink or go without lol and there wasn't anything else to drink in the house at that time :(

Just watching a health program and they just said tea and coffee are bad for your teeth cos they stain them!! thats what i always thought. caffeine containing drinks are also bad for various peopel with medical conditions both physical and mental health....! so beware! Its also a diuretic, meaning that it makes you need the toilet more....surely this dehydrates you?? from what i know it contradicts what u found out chewy...not sure which is true!

Thumbs up Re: Tea - Healthier than water

There are to much contradictory health informations out there... it is simply impossible to know what is "correct", you have to choose what is working for you... i tried a lot of things and nothing had a really "good" or "bad" effect on me if i did not expect this effect... that is why now i am doing kinda an "experiment" and i just choose what i FEEL like drinking or eating, no matter what others say :)
