    Default Strikes/spending cuts/protests

Just wondering with all the strikes that have occurred over the last few years, the massive spending cuts both local councils and Governments are making at the moment, the student protests etc, whether people think the next few years could see a change in the country, going back to the days where there were sections of the workforce that were on strike for long periods, protests, battles etc, because of all these spending cuts etc. Would hate to see the country...........well I wouldn't say go to civil war with itself, but more..........erm..........what's the best way to put this........would hate to see the country in a situation where strikes, protests, battles between the public and politicians (not physical, but more territorial, kind of like what happened with the miners strike) becomes the norm. Anyone reckon we could be heading towards a period of unrest? Obviously I hope it doesn't happen, but I suppose given there seems to be alot of anger around, it's not impossible.

I would hate to see it happen. I clearly remember the time of the miners strike and it was very scary. I think level headed people, no matter how difficult we are finding things, have to realise that we have all had it too good for too long. My wish is that politicians would step out of their ivory towers and try to realise how hard it is for the general public. The petrol cost is rising, the cost of food is rising, so on and so on but they can still afford it whereas most of us are having to go without basics never mind the luxuries - what are luxuries anyway?! Living in a rural area I see so many situations where the councils waste money - they are all little 'Hitlers' building kingdoms. Let's do away with them and we might all be a bit better off.

I believe this can go in here as in my opinion it's related.

BBC News - Public service pension overhaul urged by Hutton report

Basically people in the public sector are going to have to work longer, for lower pensions. Sounds like they'll have a choice of either retiring at retirement age and (in the words of the article) live in poverty, or work into their 70's, maybe even their 80's, but still get a poor pension. I can see this leading to mass strikes personally. Alot of pensions are already worth naff all, and this will just make things worse. Apparently it'll be linked to average career earnings, rather than final salary pensions, and public sector workers will have to pay in even more than they do now, to get a pitiful pension.
