Remembrance Sunday

It's sad but true Bib that todays youth and not all of them - but the majority don't realise what the older generation have done for us in fighting wars to keep our freedom.

My grandfather is 89 and to me absolutely fantastic and to know of what he went through as a young man, being a Japanese prisoner of war and the horrific things he went through and saw - for me, you and every other person in this country.

It's not much to ask to remember the people who died for us, and the one's who are still living.

In my opinion we don't do enough for the survivors of the war, the service men and women who gave up their lives or years of their lives for us - one day, one church service, buying a poppy etc it's not much to ask - is it?

I think the schools should make more of an effort in keeping the war alive for future generations. Why do they do so much work on old kings and queens and things like that when things that have shaped our lives as they are now like the world wars don't seem to get a mention.

I regret not asking my grandparents more about the war, I don't even know if my grandad's had any rankings in the war - I don't know where they served or what they did. They may not have wanted to talk about it too much because of what they went through but I wish I'd at least asked!

We have a place not far from us called Bovington Tank museum and we went there recently - they have a new centre now - it's not just tanks there is a room where they have created trenches - not obviously in mud but it was interesting to get a bit of an insight - I would love to learn more about the wars and I wish that I could do something like they did in Goodnight Sweetheart so I could go back and see it for myself.

My daughters Scout troop didn't even attend the march today and I think that is bad!!

Haven't been to Bovington recently so haven't seen the trenches exhibit - bet it's really interesting. All in all it's a superb museum. Any of you reading this who come to Dorset for your summer holidays should certainly try to include a day trip to Bovington. (No, I don't work for the Tourist Information Office!!).

On a more serious note I can't believe your daughter's Scout troop didn't march today. When I was a kid in the girl guides it was always a great honour to polish shoes and badges and get dressed up in my uniform for the march through the high street behind the town band and the veterans and boy how important you felt if you were carrying the flag or had been asked to lay the poppy wreath at the war memorial.

Scouts and Guides played their part in the war and I think it's very sad that these days the leaders of these organizations aren't doing all they can to remind our youngsters today of sacrifices made by so many.

I agree, Leone is a Girl Guide and she went with her Guides (and Scouts) laid wreaths and held a service at the local church for Remembrance Day, William thorough enjoyed it too (not understanding much of it though).

When I was in the Guides, we used to take part in processions and church services, sell poppy's and do bob a job for the different war charities.

Gosh hasn't our country gone to potts. lol

i used to attend the services at the barracks when i was in the cadets when i was younger . It is always so moving when they do the parades, i know the schools around here go up to the church and lay wreaths and take part in the service, my daughters have been asking us alot about what the poppy's are for and why we buy them i have been explaining to them about all the brave soldiers that died in battle for our country, but it should be made part of the school curriculum at this time of years, so that the younger children can understand why we have a 2 minutes silence on the 11 November at 11am. why should the brave people that fought for our country be forgotten.
