in a nutshell they make there money advertizing, people pay google to have the privlidge of there website advertized google can then put there site onto all sorts of other related sites, google is free i use google free when i submit a website its free and still makes good rankings.

google make there money threw sponserships and applications they sell like google earth (paid Version), google cart etc
