Default How to write a poem

As some of you might have seen in another thread, one of my hobbies is writing poems.

I mostly do this when I have something on my mind, like I feel bad or upset. Sometimes I feel wonderful and want to share it too. So in other words I mostly write poems to express some kind of emotion. However I can also write poems for others when they provide me with topics.

In the thread http://www.chatanplay.com/arcade/gra...oems-here.html I have also seen people saying they would love to be able to write poems.

So I thought I would start some kind of small course for people in here to get a bit acquainted to poetry.

I am not a teacher and I can not educate people to write well. All I can do is tell you all a bit of how I write and think and learn you a bit of what poetry is about. The rest is up to you, meaning practise and practise and more practise.

That is why, in this thread, I will also let you practise, so in a way you will get homework.

If you are willing to learn a bit about poetry and how to write please let me know and I will start giving some pointers.

For now I will leave you with this. A poem is not about rhyming. Poems can even be single words, although I prefer sentences myself. The most essential thing about poetry is that it has emotion and feelings. Those feelings are mostly written in metaphors and such so that you express yourself differently and not clearly to all people but to most. So you can say you are hiding your feelings behind a wall of words.

Even that last sentence marked in red is like poetry as you are not truly hiding and there will not be an actual wall of words.

Also you use comparisons like for instance I was running like an antelope, or easier The room was as white as snow or as green as grass.

When you write, try to read out loud what you have written. This way you get a bit of a feeling that what you have written sounds well and you will find spelling errors (this will also help Spell Checking in Firefox Browser - Chatanplay Tutorials )

If you are willing to join, then this will be your first task. Write 4 - 5 sentences that have the following words in it: Date, Heart, Feel, Love.
They can be anywhere in the sentences.

I will not continue this thread until some people joined in and posted the sentences, so it is up to if this will be a nice thread with dedicated people or not. I hope there will be a few that will join in as Poetry can be wonderful, especially to get rid of certain feelings or to intensify them.

    Have fun :)

There was a time, I can't remember the date,
When all I did was love to hate,
My heart seemed torn in two
On how to feel and express myself to you.

Good idea Foxy, I used to write poetry for myself, and I did a have couple published but I never really thought it was any good. I would love to learn how to write poetry properly - thank you.

One person seems to have joined so far, nice contribution Chewy. You did the task well.

Remember that I am no teacher, I can only give some pointers that I use and some details I may find on the internet.

It is your own effort that will probably lead to write poetry others will like

I do hope that others will try and do some effort as Chewy did, poetry is not to be ashamed of, it is about writing your emotions, feelings, thoughts, worries etc, but it can also just be humorous

I lie awake and shed a tear
And think of you and wish you was here

That was the poem I made up, on the first year off him passing on.

This thread is to become better and the effort is always appreciated dear. Besides it isn't that bad at all. Only thing is that 4-5 sentences were asked and added up I come to 3 so I will try and add one for you:

I remember the date we met
and I feel the love deep in my heart
    This I will never forget
Until the finish, because this was the start

OK a few joined (thanks to those who did), although I was hoping for more but let's continue.

Another good thing about writing a poem is to act as an actor. Try to be what you want to write about or crawl into the head of the person you write about, how strange that person might be or have been ;)

In that case you can write a good and funny poem even if you are in a bad mood.

Also if you write a poem about someone, try to ask or remember certain characteristics that person has or had. That way people will recognise certain things in it and feel comfortable or can relate to it. This also goes for topics that we all might like to debate about.

so the next assignment will be. Write 2 times 4 sentences using at least one comparison (see first post) and try to write about a topic we can all have in common. You can choose one of these topics:

    1 Birthday
    2 Death
    3 Lost love
    4 News
    5 Child(ren)

So in total I want to see 8 sentences only. Not more not less :P

Enjoy and good luck to those joining. You can still join even though you did not join at first. The effort is just in trying and we will admire that part even if the attempt isn't really well.
