    Genealogy

I got to start this thread on Genealogy as it is one of my favourite hobbies. (Obviously, this site is too hehe)

I've been doing my family tree on and off now for about 10 years.

There are some brilliant sites now a days to help you to grow and find information for your family tree.

Finally after 10 years I have actually paid (£36)to go on one particular site www.GenesReunited.co.uk, which I must admit is one of the best genealogy sites I have found, another one is Genealogy and Family History Records - Ancestry.co.uk as you have access to birth, marriage and death records, and all the Census's apart from 1881 for some reason - but this Census (the 1881) is free of charge through other sites.

I have managed through only paying £36 to extend my tree to 1277 relatives, and now I am starting to have to buy birth and marriage certificates for information I have been unable to find.

It is an amazing feeling to get in touch with and find out about relatives, Bib2812, whom you may have seen on the site is actually my fifth cousin once removed. We found each other on the GR (GeneReunited site). It's been great as we've really hit it off :)

If you want to start researching your family tree, then we'd be both happy to help you out ... just leaving your questions here and one of us will answer you :)

One tip - just to get you started ... is to talk to as many live relatives you know and get as much information like, names, dates of birth and where they were born, this then gives you a really good basis to start.

Hi 5th cozz once removed!!! Yeah, this has to be one of the greatest hobbies going. A friend came up last night (my daughter gives her daughter piano lessons). Just sitting at the computer I got her back to her great-great-great-grandfather!!!! On the way there were extensive families which she had no idea about and, of course, alot of illegitimate ones. She said I'm going to show all this info to my mum - she'll be in tears. It's so easy to get back to the early 1800's. I'd be happy to help out but I'm sure you're more experienced than I am.

How about giving some hints and tips for people who are interested but dont know where to start.

    For instance,

    • what resources do you find most usefull
    • what costs are incurred doing online research
    • what things to look out for, to ensure you are tracing the right person

I know nothing about geneaolgy other than what i see Chewy do.

Heres a little introduction to it.

Lol I'm no more experienced than you hun, it's just a lot of reading through records and knowing where to look :)

I know what you mean about your friends mum be in tears (of joy and amazement), my grandfather who is 89 never new where his grandparents or great grandparents came from - he does now and he can't wait to go to Norfolk to visit the places where they lived, worked and died.

(Psst Bib - my grandfather - my mum's dad - not the Edmunds side - he was married to Phyllis Edmunds :) )
