Smile Insurance Questions - Maybe I can help

    Hi

As a lot of you are aware I work for an insurance broker. DON'T PANIC I'm not touting for business lol. I know insurance can be a confusing thing and I would just like to offer some help.

If you have something you are worried about or want to know if you are covered for I would like to see if I can help. I'm not saying I know all the answers but I might be able to find out for you and give you the answer in good old fashioned PLAIN ENGLISH.

I have been in the insurance industry for 10 years and deal mainly with Motor Insurance, Household Insurance and Travel Insurance but the other people I work with have a good knowledge of Public Liability insurance and other more complicated insurance, the only things we don't deal with are Mortgages and life assurance.

Well if I can help either leave a post on the forum (you never know it might help someone else to) or if you prefer send me a private message on here.

I hope I haven't bored you all too much.

Nice post foxy, i got a few questions for you

    1. When getting a home insurance policy, im always wary that if i needed to claim, the items wouldnt be honoured if i didnt have proof of purchase of the original, is that the case ?

    2. Of all the small print, how do you manage to decyper if what you are paying for is what you actually will get in the event a cliam is needed ?

    Thats enough for now ;)

The only time I've heard of receipts being needed is for high valued items - most insurance is done on trust (strange I know) and the only time I would think insurers would question a claim is if you put a large claim in. Insurers look at the amount you are trying to claim for compared to your sum insured. for example if you insure for £25,000 for your whole contents and then you have a burglary and try and claim for say £15,000 of items insurers would be concerned you had not insured high valued items correctly.

With regards to small print - I would always advise you to TELL the insurance company what YOU want covered rather than just ask them for a quote and presume you are insured for what you want. If in doubt tell them you want specific items specified on your insurance.

And remember the cheapest insurance isn't always the best where home insurance is concerned.

    Hope that's helped

I'm glad you had the right cover Daz. I would recommend to anyone that takes jewellry, cameras, laptops etc away with them when they go on holiday(which will be most people) to make sure they have All Risks Cover or otherwise known as Personal Possessions cover. It can be a very inexpensive part of a contents policy and covers you for items lost or stolen. Again I would suggest you ask to specify items you want to make sure are covered although most items under £1500 are usually covered in the sum insured.

    Hope that makes sense :)

Really helpful post hun - thanks - I think we will get a quote for contents insurance.

Do you pay extra for accidental damage or do contents insurance include this - having kids a must I think :)

You pay extra for accidental damage cover but I wouldn't have thought it would be a huge amount and I always recommend if someone has pets or kids or a partner that is forever decorating that they should have accidental damage cover.

As the weather is causing floods again - everyone should check their home insurance is up to date - it will not only help you replace your belongings if the worst happens but most cover alternative accommodation too. Although the cover is not open ended it could at least help you until you can get cleaned up or sort some other accommodation.

    Hope this helps :)
