Because I am a bit of a nagging fox I have to disagree with the first statement because if you for instance start last and you overtake the second person you don't have to be second yourself. It means you first overtook one and then another but there might be many more.

So in this case it is the point of view that would see how wrong you are. If it would have said When you overtook the second placed one then I would agree.
