The whole Halloween thing is develish. I hate kids coming round begging. Sorry but as a Christian I think it is a totallly American idea which has come over here. I never open the door to any kids.
I think you should do it, the only downside is the price... we are going in a group of over 10 because we want to pay less!
That walk sounds good mum, i'll come with you ;)
I dont really believe in Halloween either Bib! Its a pagen belief, celebrating the devil!? But I like to dress up with my friends! :)
There'll be some football and motor racing for me to watch that day/night, so that's what I'll be doing on Halloween. We've started closing the curtains, turning the lights off etc so they think nobody is in. We also deliberately make sure we have no sweets or whatever in the house to give them. Cruel maybe, but that's what we do now (before anyone calls me a scrooge, spoilsport, etc, all 4 of us in the house agree to do that, so it isn't just me). Even when I was younger I never got dressed up, went trick or treating, etc. Never interested me, even when I was a kid myself, so not a case of me outgrowing it or anything, just never been interested in it, despite the fact as a kid you want to do it because it means lots of sweets etc).
I did some research on Halloween and it stems from ancient Celtic practices, Catholic and Roman religious rituals and European folk traditions that got all mixed together over time.
So it originally started in Ireland and Scotland and they took it to America.
It was actually in the 19th century, Halloween began to lose its religious connections.
Years ago people thought it as a day when the dead return to the earth, and ancient Celts would light bonfires and wear costumes to ward off ghosts.
The Catholic Hallowmas called it All Saints' Day or All Souls' Day, the Romans had a festival called Feraliaand and the Celts holiday of Samhain.
The UK has been very Americanised by Halloween - most people and kids just see it as another fun day to dress up and have fun.
I must admit, I'm with Bib on hating kids knocking on my door for sweets though lolol
