Was a really bad winter everywere was snowed in and I know its kids stuff but we would go out and shovel snow off peoples paths ,well it would get us ciggys and cider wouldn’t it.
Round about valentines day there was a fun fair on Clifton downs ,it was to be there all week .picking our giros up that week we decided to go to the fair and instead of putting away the board n lodging money I blew the lot on rides ,cigs, food , just remember having a great time , didn’t go back to the b&b ...

Well I finally got to Bristol . wondered the streets looking for the harbour, when I found it there was nothing there , no merchant ships that I could see just a massive ship, SS great Britain I think its called.

I didn’t know what I was going to do , it was night time nowhere open.

I was walking the streets, dodging the police. squatting in shop entrances out of the rain , anywere were there was a dark place I couldn’t be seen.

Tramps coming up ...

I had money in my pocket ,no were to go so I hung around anywere I thought I would be safe. Iwas 14 but looked 20 and was 6ft 2.
Safe , I was 14 ,what was I doing, I wanted the good times like all my mates seemed to be having.i wanted to come and go as I pleased .say to mum and dad im going out ,not being told I cant go out the embarrassment and shame when a friend calls for you and your dad answers the door and says your not allowed out because you didn’t eat all your tea.or you hadn’t ...

Nana was still alive and said I was a bad un . said I only had myself tp blame for all the hidings id get off me dad. Mum was too soft , she would clout us with her hand , and all we did was laugh at her , say is that all u got .really wound mum up that did lol.

Started high school , now our kid was already at high school so dad told me to respect him,as he was oldest ,and to do as he said.

But of course I wanted more. I wanted to take ciggys to take to school .i wanted to be in with the crowd ….you know what I mean you oldies
So on Fridays I started pinching from the newspaper man so I could have money for cigs, sweets ect the whole week

I soon got caught out, nothing lasts forever does it .
The news paper man had been round to each house and asked them to telephone him if they paid me the weekly bill
