The job didn’t last long 2 reasons for that
1 was when they wanted refrences I couldn’t supply them could i.
2 it was so easy to make money there , drivers were always wanting to buy this or that
was easy to sell things , everything came in boxes, soon selling away ,but cos I dint have no refs I was told I could work the week out.
Rest of the week I sold more stuff to drivers, anybody I could persuade
So no job , had a week to find a job or id have to give my bed up
Well it was London wasn’t it temptation everywere,…was out in the west end every day wondering the streets not looking for work girls walking up to me asking me if I wanted a good time.. I was embarrassed at first but after a few days it was normal behavior . but it wasn’t getti ng me any work , back at the hostel I had been speaking to a guy who was going to show me how easy it was to get money
I was stupid enough to follow him and do as he wanted…..he never worked ,always dressed well and always had loads of money….
One night we went out at around 1 am only a few streets away from the hostel..
And stopped out side this shop.
We put the window through and crawled into the shop , were we ransacked the shelves , ciggys, sweets, chocolates, we couldn’t get the till open so launched it through the window , each walked out the shop with a bag full of goodies , dragging the safe into a dark corner were we could return for it later that night
We got back to the hostel tipped out ill gotten gains onto the bed ,locked the door and went back for the till.
Going past the shop we were asked by the police were we were going and if we new anything about this. No we didn’t we said n they told us to be on our way
We didn’t get the till ,but went back 5 nights running and did the same each night.
Mostly chocolates now though as we had found we could easily sell them .
Ever go into a café sit yourself down hang your coat on the back of your chair and order your breakfast… eat your breakfast as if you haven’t a care in the world…push your plate away and compliment the chef that it was a grand meal….then pull the wrong coat off the chair and bolt from the café . having been fed and getting yourself a new coat as well.
Sometimes we were lucky ,there would be a wallet and cash in, other times just change
But we would do this in different parts of the west end each week .
Again getting money in those days was easy , only took you a day ,2 days to get 2 weeks money from the social security, would sign on in soho on Wednesdays and get a giro ,then on Thursdays would go to whitechapple and do the same ,so easy once you knew how to work the system. But the old saying ,the more you got the more you want comes back to haunt me.
We got greedy we hatched a plan to go round the south coast signing on in each seaside town ,but it was harder than we thought we didn’t plan it very well and our first stop was our last as we started off in brighton with nowt in our pockets and had to look for a quick way to make a buck, think every1 in brighton new what we was upto .ended up with nothing and in the police cells.
